Did you know that Merano was discovered by the first tourists in the 19th century? Besides the charming landscape, it was particularly the recommendations of various doctors that recommended Merano for its special climate for cures. Among the guests of Merano was also, in 1870, the Austrian Empress Sissi. The visit of this special guest contributed greatly to Merano's development as a sought-after tourist destination. Merano flourished: grand hotels, villas, and promenades were built - the size of the city doubled within a few years.
